Delhi: 23 -year -old cricketer Dirda Patel, who recently completed MSc in Artificial Intelligence (AI), was one of the 274 people killed in an Air India aircraft accident last week. AI 171, Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 crashed on Thursday, a few seconds after flying from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad.
According to officials, the aircraft flew around 1:30 pm, but crashed shortly. The BBC and Aerdel & Wharfdel Senior Cricket League (in which Diradadh) confirmed that DIRD Patel was one of the 241 passengers and crew members who lost their lives in this aircraft going from Ahmedabad to London.
The Cricket League said in its statement, “The League is very sad to know that Dird Patel, the player of the Leeds Modernians Cricket Club, died in an air India aircraft accident in Ahmedabad yesterday. He was the brother of former Pool Cricket Club’s former player Killi Patel.”
He further said, “DIRD played in 2024 as a foreign player for the Leeds Modernians CC. He scored 312 runs in 20 matches for the first team of the club and took 29 wickets, as well as completed his masters.
Dird Patel studied MSc in Artificial Intelligence from University of Hudersfield. Dr. George Barjianis, reader at the University School of Computing and Engineering, remembered DIRD as an extraordinary student.
He said in a conversation with BBC, “Deadhi was an extraordinary person who was always intellectually curious. He used to ask me questions during classes, which reflect their deep understanding and dedication. He had a clear ability to see a big picture and he understood how his learning could bring positive changes in the society.”
