Delhi: Digvesh Rathi, a young spinner of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), is in the news these days for his bowling as well as his unique ‘notebook celebrations’. Rathi, who is performing brilliantly in IPL 2025, has suffered a fine for this celebration twice so far. However, cricket veteran former Bharti captain Sunil Gavaskar has objected to this. He said that for the first time the fine was correct, but the second time was a wrong decision to punish Rathi.
Fines for the first time justified
Gavaskar wrote in his column that when Rathi dismissed his former Delhi partner Priyansh Arya, he was seen very close to him and was seen doing ‘Notebook Celebration’, which could seem aggressive. So the fine was correct at that time. But the next time he celebrated the same celebration, he was far away from the batsman and was celebrating only in his style, it was not appropriate to finish again.
Three demerit points, now the danger of ban
Rathi has been applied to three demerit points so far. If one more time he violates the Code of Conduct of the IPL, then he may get a match ban. Rathi has also emerged as a major spinner of Lucknow in the presence of an experienced bowler like Ravi Bishnoi.
The way of celebration changed
Rathi did a ‘notebook celebration’ after taking the wicket of Priyansh Arya in the match against Punjab Kings. After this, he did the same against Mumbai Indians, due to which he had to pay a fine again. After this, he changed his way of celebration. When he dismissed his ideal Sunil Naren against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), he bowed down on the field and played ‘writing’, on which he did not get any punishment.
Should make your own style
Gavaskar said another important thing, he said that Indian players should develop their unique celebration style by taking inspiration from Caribbean cricketers. He also added that nowadays cricketers are copying their favorite footballers. Giving examples, he mentioned Mohammad Siraj of Gujarat Titans, who imitate Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘Seu’ celebrations.
Celebration should be on special occasions
Gavaskar further wrote, “If the bowler has dismissed a legendary batsman on a brilliant ball, then it is understandable. But if a big celebration is done after taking a wicket after eating two-three fours and sixes in an over, then he seems ridiculous.”
Rathi became covered as soon as he made his debut
Digvesh Rathi has performed brilliantly in his first IPL season. He has taken 8 wickets in 6 matches. Their average has been 23.12 and economy rate is 7.70. On April 14, Lucknow Super Giants will play their next match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), where everyone will be eyeing Rathi once again.
