Delhi: Indian team veteran fast bowler Jaspreet Bumrah has been declared the world’s best male cricketer for 2024. At the same time, Indian women’s batter Smriti Mandhana has received the honor of the best women cricketer of the year. This year’s awards saw the dominance of Indian players. However, the award for the best T20 cricketer has been given to Nicholas Puran of West Indies. This claim has been made in the prestigious Wisden’s Almanac 2025.
Bumrah was described as ‘Star of the Year’ by Lawrence Booth, editor of Visden. Bumrah took 71 wickets at an average of 15 in Tests in 2024 and played a key role in India’s T20 World Cup win. In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he took 32 wickets at an average of 13.06 alone. The booth wrote that Bumrah was aggressive and told him one of the greatest bowlers.
At the same time, Smriti Mandhana, the star of Indian women’s cricket, was elected the best female cricketer of the year. Mandhana scored a total of 1659 runs in all formats in 2024, the highest in a calendar year by any female cricketer. It consists of four ODI centuries, which is a new record. Mandhana also completed his second Test century by playing 149 runs against South Africa in June, winning India by 10 wickets. On the other hand, West Indies wicket -keeper batsman Nicholas Puran has been voted the best T20 cricketer of the year.
Mitchell Santner gets the Visden Trophy honor
Mitchell Santner of New Zealand was awarded the Visden Trophy for taking 13 wickets against India in the Pune Test. With this performance, New Zealand took an unassailable 2–0 lead in the series and India lost in the domestic Test series for the first time since 2012.
