Delhi: Former veteran spinner of the Indian team Ravichandran Ashwin was honored with the Padma Shri Award by India President Draupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Monday. Ashwin has received this honor for his contribution to Indian cricket. He announced his retirement from international cricket in December last year. Ashwin is India’s second highest wicket -taking bowler (537 wickets) in Test cricket and is in eighth position in Test history.
Ashwin is currently playing for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025, which is a five -time IPL champion team. He returned to the Yellow Army after almost a decade.
The right-handed off-spinner announced a shocking retirement after the third border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against Australia in Gaba, Brisbane.
In the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ashwin was awarded the fourth highest civilian honor Padma Shri with former footballer IM Vijayan. Paralympian Harvinder Singh, who won a gold medal in archery at 2024 Paris Paralympics, and para-athletics coach Satyapal Singh was also awarded the Padma Shri. On this occasion, Ashwin wore a Navy Blue Suit and a striped shirt under it.
On the other hand, Sreejesh is counted among the great players of Indian hockey. He is one of the most successful goalkeepers of the modern era. He played a key role in getting India medals in two consecutive Olympic Games, 2021 Tokyo and 2024 Paris.
Sreejesh announced his retirement after playing his last international match at the Paris Olympics last year, where India’s male hockey team won a bronze medal. Now he too has been awarded this honor.
