Delhi: The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) will inaugurate three newly designated stands at the Wankhede Stadium at 4:30 pm today, who have been dedicated to three veterans (Rohit Sharma, Ajit Wadekar and Sharad Pawar) who contributed significantly to Indian cricket.
Devicha Pavilion Level 3 will now be known as Rohit Sharma Stand. This is a special tribute to him at his home ground.
The Grand Stand Level 3 is named after former BCCI President and Senior Cricket Administrator Sharad Pawar, while the Grand Stand Level 4 will now be known as former captain of the Indian cricket team Ajit Wadekar. This historic decision was unanimously approved in the 86th annual general meeting of MCA.
Rohit Sharma made his Test debut in 2013 and became India’s full -time captain in 2022. He won the T20 World Cup in 2024 under his leadership and the ICC Champions Trophy in March 2025. For Mumbai, he has played 46 first class, 17 List A and 25 T20 matches. The stand in his name at the Wankhede Stadium makes him stand in the line of great players, including Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar and Vijay Merchant.
At the same time, the departed Ajit Wadekar, who was the number 3 batsman and the best slip fielder, won India in 1971 and won the historic Test series in West Indies and England. He played 37 Tests and 2 ODIs from 1966 to 1974. His first class debut was made in 1958-59. He died in August 2018 at the age of 77.
On the other hand, senior leader and veteran cricket administrator Sharad Pawar served as the BCCI President from 2005 to 2008 and played an important role in bringing the 2011 Cricket World Cup to India.
