Delhi: Mumbai, which is called the home of Indian cricket, is now going to get a big cricket stadium according to its name and status. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced this in a special event held at Wankhede Stadium on Friday, 16 May. He informed that if the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) brings a proposal, the state government will provide a big land, where a new stadium with a capacity of 1 lakh spectators can be built.
Mumbai CM Fadnavis announced
The announcement was made in the program where three new stands of the Wankhede Stadium were inaugurated. These stands have been named after Indian ODI captain Rohit Sharma, former captain Ajit Wadekar and senior cricket administrator Sharad Pawar.
Chief Minister Fadnavis said, “Last year, late MCA president Amol Kale and current president Ajinkya Naik came to me and he expressed his desire to build a new stadium. Today I assure MCA that if they bring the proposal, the government will definitely give them the necessary land. Mumbai and Maharashtra are the state of lovers and Maharashtra cricket lovers and its contributions in the world.
Fadnavis also said that the establishment of MCA will complete 100 years in 2030. To make this opportunity special, the new stadium should be ready in the next five years. He assured that whatever help MCA would need in this construction, the state government will fulfill it.
MCA president told the plan
MCA President Ajinkya Naik said that an application has been made for the new stadium in Amme area of Thane district. However, he also said that if any other appropriate place is found, then a stadium can also be built there.
Naik said, “We want MCA to have a large stadium of its own, in which at least 1 lakh spectators can sit. We have applied for land in Amme. If the state government gives some other place, we will be happy there too.”
Wankhede Stadium is special for India
This year is the 50th anniversary of the Wankhede Stadium. It was built in 1975 and was made completely new before the 2011 World Cup. On this ground, India defeated Sri Lanka and won the 2011 World Cup title. Apart from this, Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell match and Virat Kohli’s 50th ODI century also took place on this ground.
Apart from Wankhede, there are two more Test venues in Mumbai, Brabourne Stadium and Gymkhana Ground. India’s first domestic international match was played at the Gymkhana Ground, but after that there was no big match there. The Brabourne Stadium is a capacity of 20,000 spectators and was Mumbai’s main cricket center for a long time.
Currently the Wankhede Stadium has a capacity of around 34,000, while the DY Patil Stadium (Navi Mumbai) has a capacity of around 45,000. DY Patil has hosted several IPL and women international matches in recent years.
