Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not yet announced the Indian team for the Test series against England. This series starts from June 20. Before the announcement of the team, the biggest question is about the captaincy. After Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket recently, the team needs a new leader. According to reports, Shubman Gill is leading the captaincy race for this tour. But, now the questions are arising that why Indian fast bowler Jaspreet Bumrah is not being considered as the option of captaincy?
Bumrah’s fitness made question mark
However, Jaspreet Bumrah, who remained Rohit’s deputy for three years, was considered a natural choice. But, now there are reports that perhaps Bumrah has not been included in the race for captaincy. The main reason for this is being told to their fitness. Bumrah has been injured many times since the Test debut and has missed many important matches. In the last Test against Australia, he had trouble in his back, due to which he could not bowl in the final innings.
The problem of this back made him out of the Champions Trophy 2025 and he could not play even in the opening matches of IPL 2025. In such a situation, BCCI may not want to take risks.
Sanjay Manjrekar raised questions
Former cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar also gave his opinion on this debate. He wrote on social media, “Has Bumrah himself refuses the captaincy? Or he is out of the England series? If not, then why are we discussing who will be the next captain?”
He further wrote, “If fitness is the only issue, would Rohit Sharma not play only 3 Tests in Australia? It is not only availability, but also the ability to become captain. Especially in Test cricket.”
Has Bumrah said he won’t captain India? Or has he rled Himself out of the England Series? Then why are we discusing who will captain India?

If bumrah’s availability has been of injuries is the issue, didnys, Availability can’t be the be all & end all, deservability far more important. Especially in Tests.

Gill captain and Pant Deputy?
According to the reports that are coming out at the moment, Shubman Gill can be given captaincy. At the same time, wicketkeeper batsman Rishabh Pant can be made vice -captain. Gill has recently performed well by captaining India A and the team management also likes their calm and stable nature.
Now it will have to be seen who BCCI assigns this big responsibility. But, it is certain that the tour of England can begin many new chapters for Team India.
