Delhi: The chief selector of Indian cricket Ajit Agarkar has spoken openly on Virat Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket. He told that the former captain himself contacted him and shared the decision that he wanted to bid farewell to Test cricket. Kohli said goodbye to the format last Monday, which he loved and continued to support him, which broke the hearts of crores of Indian fans.
When the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the 18 -member team for the tour of England, Agarkar respected Kohli’s decision and said that when a legendary player feels that he is unable to give 100 percent, it is probably the right time to retire.
The former fast bowler said, “When such players retire, it is difficult to fill their place. (Ravichandran) Ashwin has also retired a few months ago. All these have been the pillars of Indian cricket. From a (different) perspective, it is a chance for someone else. I had interacted with both of them in the last few months. Virat had approached in the last few months. Virat told that he wanted to end now.”
He further said, “We have seen him giving him 200 percent on every ball. Even when he was not batting and fielding. He had thrown everything. If he could not fulfill his high standards, it was probably the right decision.”
47 -year -old Agarkar said, “It must have been difficult for him too, but we should respect him. He has earned that honor. The great players are always true to themselves, when a player has played 123 Tests, he will definitely miss his shortage, but now it is an opportunity for someone else. He has shown how success is achieved at this level.”
Ajit said, “Talking about Rohit, he led the team in the last few years. This is a new cycle and we have to create something new now. But, there is no doubt. We should show respect to him, not speculation. He cannot forget the contribution of the matches that they have won for years. It is someone else’s turn.”
