Delhi: Selection Committee Chairman Ajit Agarkar on Saturday announced India’s 18 -member team for the upcoming Test series of five matches against England. Many major changes have been made in this team, in which Shubman Gill has been appointed as the new Test captain of India, while Rishabh Pant has been made vice -captain.
While Karun Nair has returned to the Test team after eight years, prominent players like Shreyas Iyer, Mohammed Shami and Sarfaraz Khan have been dropped from the team.
Shreyas Iyer, who is the main player of India in the ODI team and has performed brilliantly in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, he did not get a place in the Test team despite the recent retirement of legendary batsmen like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The selectors have expressed confidence in batsmen like Sai Sudarshan and Abhimanyu Ishwar, who have not been able to make their debut in Test cricket till now.
After Shreyas did not get a place in the team, former Indian veteran opener Virender Sehwag said that the 30 -year -old batsman does not get the credit he deserves and if given the opportunity, he can play in all three formats.
Sehwag said on the cricbuj, “Absolutely. He does not get much credit for captaincy. Manoj (Tiwari) said that Rishabh Pant did not get the captaincy because his IPL season was not good. But, Iyer’s season has been fantastic, he is also captain. Then why can’t he play Test cricket?”
The explosive opener believes that Shreyas should have got a chance in the Test team given his recent form. He further said that due to aggressive style, Shreyas could put pressure on England.
Veeru said, “When a player is in form, he should be taken on a tour, because he is more prone to performance. I would like to see him in the Test team. If he keeps the same approach in the Test, then the team can benefit. If you have 2-3 such players, the opposition is under pressure. England plays from 6-7 runs per over. If the Indian team can play 4-5 runs per over.”
