Delhi: Former leg -spinner Anil Kumble of the Indian cricket team has been appointed as the brand ambassador of the Forest and Environment Department of Karnataka. Announcing this appointment, Karnataka Forest Minister Ishwar Khandre said that former cricketers will work to spread awareness among people about the safety and protection of forests, environment and wildlife.
Khandre said, “Kumble is very fond of wildlife. He also loves the environment. Apart from this, he has also served as the vice -president of the Karnataka Wildlife Board, so we have decided to make him an ambassador of his department. Kumble has accepted this role without any fee.”
In addition, Khandre said that a new garden will be developed on about 153 acres of land in Madappanhalli near Yelhanka, Bangalore, which will be on the lines of historic Lalbagh and Kabban Park.
He further said, “Lalbagh had developed during Hyder Ali’s time and Kabban Park was built by the British. Since then there was no grand and big garden like him in the city, so we have decided to develop a new garden near Madappanhalli.”
In response to a question, Khandre said that after taking over as the Forest Minister, in the last two years, 128 acres of enraged forest land in Bengaluru, which is worth about 4,000 crore Indian rupees, has been freed. In addition, 444 acres of land owned by Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT), which cost 14,300 crore, has been prevented from being sold to real estate companies. He said, “A legal battle is going on in this matter and if the decision comes in favor of the government, then there is a plan to develop a garden on this land too.”
