Delhi: Former Team India captain and current commentator Sourav Ganguly has surprised at the inclusion of Shreyas Iyer in the Indian team for the Test series against England. Ganguly said that Iyer has performed brilliantly in the last one year and he should have been in this Test team.
Great performance in IPL and domestic cricket
Ganguly praised Iyer’s captaincy and said that he gave Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) IPL title in 2024. After this, Punjab Kings were reached to the final in the 2025 season. Apart from this, he scored 480 runs in seven innings at an average of 68.57 in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25, including two centuries.
Weakness also removed
Ganguly also said that Iyer has done a lot of work on his weakness against the short ball (small balls) and now he is scoring runs under pressure. According to him, “Iyer is currently in the best phase of his career. He has understood his responsibility and has done well in difficult times. Test cricket is a bit different but he should have got a chance in this series.”
Bumrah will be important for India’s victory
Ganguly further said that India can win the series in England if the team bats well and Jasprit Bumrah is fit. Giving the example of the 2020-21 Australia series, he said that India had won there without Kohli and Rohit.
New expectations in new captaincy
The five -match Test series between India and England will start from 20 June in Hadingley, Leeds. In this series, Shubman Gill will captain India’s Test team for the first time and Rishabh Pant will be vice -captain. India won the last Test series in England in 2007. This time the team will get a tough competition from the English team captained by Ben Stokes, which has recently reached second place in the ICC Test rankings.
