Main point:
Carlos Brathwaite said that players are not being paid on time in many franchise leagues. He suggested that the ICC should make rules for safety of salary. Brathwaite’s career is remembered for the 2016 T20 World Cup historical sixes and all -round performances.
Delhi: In the last few years, franchise cricket has gained tremendous pace in the whole world. Cricket has now become a global business from a large league like the Indian Premier League (IPL) to the new T20 league of small countries. But, there is also a big problem hidden behind this glow, that is the players not getting money on time.
Carlos Brathwaite raised questions on franchise leagues
Former West Indies all -rounder Carlos Brathwaite has raised his voice on this issue. He wrote in his LinkedIn post that in 2024 he tied up with three different franchise leagues. But, in all three, he received payment from 6 to 8 months late and till July 2025, the money of a league has not yet been received.
Brathwaite questioned in the post, “If this is happening to me, think what would happen to those young players who are starting their career?” He told that many local players take leave from their jobs and come to play in such tournaments, in the hope that this will improve their future. But, if they do not get money, then they remain empty handed.
ICC and cricket boards suggested
Brathwaite also gave some suggestions. He asked, “Should the players themselves investigate the tournament owner? Does it become the responsibility of the agents to send their players only in the trusted tournament? Or should the ICC make the rule whether the salary of all the players should be kept in a safe account (Escrow) before the tournament starts?”
He said that when ICC approves a tournament, many strict rules are already applicable. Such as anti-corruption clearance, promoter check, NOC for foreign players, etc. Then why can’t there be a rule to keep the salary of the players safe?
He also raised the question that if the cricket board of a country approves a league, should he be held responsible if the player does not get the money?
Brathwaite wrote, “It is not just a matter of money. It is a matter of confidence. It is a matter of dreams of young players. If cricket is really to make a professional game, then all the people involved in it should get their rights on time.”
Brathwaite performance in T20
Carlos Brathwaite may not have been part of the West Indies team for a long time, but he had a lot of impact in a short time. His 2016 T20 World Cup performance is still a memorable part of cricket history. Apart from this, his contribution and all -round capacity to T20 Leagues makes him a reliable player.
Brathwaite made an identity for his aggressive batting and big shots in T20 format. He has 2385 runs and 151 sixes in T20. He has been a useful medium pacer, especially in death overs. He has taken 248 wickets in T20 cricket, which is a great figure for any all -rounder.
