Delhi: England’s star spinner Shoaib Bashir created history by performing brilliantly on the first day of the opening Test of the series. Bashir took 4 wickets while troubling the New Zealand batsmen with his sharp bowling. With this, he has become the first spinner of England to take 4 wickets in a Test at Hagley Oval ground in Christchurch. Not only this, he is only the second spin bowler in world cricket after Shakib Al Hasan to achieve such a feat.

If Shoaib Bashir completes the 5 wicket haul by taking one more wicket on the second day, then he will become the first spinner to take 5 wickets in Test on this ground. No spinner has achieved this feat till now at Hagley Oval.
So far Bashir has taken 4 wickets for 69 runs in 20 overs, which also includes one maiden over. By the end of the first day’s play, New Zealand had scored 319 runs for 8 wickets. Veteran batsman Kane Williamson played an inning of 93 runs for New Zealand, but he missed a century. This is the 13th time that Williamson has become a victim of nervous nineties in international cricket.

England won the toss and decided to bowl first. At the end of the first day’s play, Glenn Phillips is unbeaten on 41* runs and Tim Southee is unbeaten on 10* runs. After Williamson, the biggest innings for New Zealand was played by captain Tom Latham, who scored 47 runs. This test is the first match of the three-match series between England and New Zealand.
