Delhi: Former Pakistani fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has expressed concern over Jasprit Bumrah’s Test career. He says that if Bumrah wants to continue in Test cricket, he will have to improve his speed. Akhtar suggested that Bumrah should consider quitting Test cricket to prolong his international career.
‘Happy 9 Baby’, Ritika Sajdeh wished husband Rohit Sharma on his 9th wedding anniversary.
In a podcast, Akhtar said, “Bumrah is a great bowler in shorter formats and ODIs because he understands the length. His bowling is excellent in death overs and powerplay. However, in Test cricket, fast pace is necessary to bowl long spells and challenge the batsmen. If the ball does not seam or reverse and lacks pace, the difficulties increase. In such a situation one has to face criticism.”
Let us tell you that Bumrah has 185 wickets in his name in 42 Test matches, which is one of the best average among Indian fast bowlers. Despite this, Akhtar believes that fitness related problems can hamper his Test career.
He further said, “Bumrah has the potential to take wickets in Test cricket, but his fitness is a big challenge. His performance in the series against New Zealand was not special, but it happens. If he wants to continue playing Tests, he will have to increase his pace. However, doing so may increase the risk of injury. If I were in his place, I would limit myself to shorter formats.”
Akhtar also said that Bumrah will have to decide his career priorities. He said, “If he is feeling well, then it is fine to play in the Test, but he will have to take special care of his fitness. He wants to play everything in IPL, ODI and Test, so he has to understand his potential and limitations.”
