Delhi: On Sunday, December 15, Bangladesh’s veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was banned from bowling in all major cricket tournaments. This decision was taken after the ban already imposed on him by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Friday, 13 December.

Questions were raised on action in September 2024
The ECB banned 37-year-old Shakib after his bowling action was tested at Loughborough University. The matter arose during a county match played for Surrey against Somerset in September 2024, when on-field umpires Steve O’Shaughnessy and David Milnes raised questions about his action.
After investigation, it was found that Shakib’s bowling action was more than the 15 degree limit prescribed as per ICC rules. According to the ECB statement, “Shakib completed an independent investigation at Loughborough University this month, which confirmed that the elbow angle in his bowling action exceeds the limit of 15 degrees.”
Banned from international cricket as well as domestic league
After this, the International Cricket Council (ICC) also reviewed Shakib’s bowling action under its rule 11.3. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed, “ECB has informed us that Shakib Al Hasan has been banned due to his bowling action. Due to this, he will no longer be able to bowl not only in England’s cricket competitions, but also in domestic leagues and international cricket outside Bangladesh.”
Will continue to play as a batsman
However, the board also said that if Shakib passes the re-test and his action is found to be correct, then he can be allowed to bowl again. Despite this ban, Shakib can continue playing as a batsman.
