‘Maybe insult is also a reason’

Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket in the middle of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. This news came as soon as the third Test ended and the veteran spinner reached Chennai the very next day. His father Ravichandran said in an interview, “I also got the news of his retirement at the last moment. This is their own decision. I cannot interfere in this, but there could be many reasons behind the way he took this step. Maybe insult is also a reason.”

emotional moment for the family

He also told that suddenly saying goodbye to Ashwin’s long career of 14-15 years was an emotional moment for the family.
“We were shocked, but we were hoping this could happen. How long can one tolerate insults?” He further said, “I completely accept his decision, but (a part of my mind) wanted him to play more.”

were constantly being ignored

The statement of Ashwin’s father indicates that his son was being continuously ignored in Test matches abroad. Especially in England and Australia, where the team management often gave priority to Ravindra Jadeja because of his batting ability. Washington Sundar was selected over Ashwin in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Ashwin got a chance in the second test. But, he was again dropped in the third Test and Jadeja was included in the team.

This decision of Ashwin is a big turning point in his career, but his contribution will always be remembered.
