Delhi: On the fourth day of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliant spell gave India a chance to make a comeback, but Australian batsman Marnus Labuschagne put his team in a strong position by scoring 70 runs. By the time this news was written, Australia had scored 190/9 runs in 70.1 overs and their lead over India was 295 runs. Bumrah kept India in the contest by dismissing Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh and Alex Carey in quick succession. With this, Bumrah became the fastest Indian fast bowler to take 200 Test wickets, he achieved this feat in his 44th Test match.
Jasprit has become the highest wicket-taker in the current ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle. 31-year-old Bumrah achieved this feat by leaving Ravichandran Ashwin behind during the Gabba Test. Bumrah has taken 74 wickets in 14 Tests, while Ashwin has taken 63 wickets in 14 matches. Ashwin had recently announced his retirement after the third test.
Record broken in WTC
On the first day of the fourth test, Bumrah took 3 wickets for 75 runs in 34 overs. After this, in the second innings too, he broke the Indian record of taking the most wickets in a single cycle of the World Test Championship by dismissing Sam Costans, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh and Alex Carey. Earlier this record was in the name of Ravichandran Ashwin, who took 71 wickets in the WTC 2019-21 cycle.
Currently the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is tied at 1-1. Bumrah has taken 29 wickets so far in this series, making him the bowler taking the most wickets in the five-match series.
