Delhi: Australian opener Nathan McSweeney is not giving up hope of returning to his Test team despite his poor performance in the Border-Gavaskar series and being out of the team. He said that he will try to make a place as a long-term replacement for Usman Khawaja after his retirement.

McSweeney was out of the team in the fourth test

McSweeney opened with Khawaja in the first three Test matches, but due to poor scores, he was dropped from the team in the fourth Test. In his place, 19-year-old Sam Constas was given a chance, who scored a brilliant half-century in the Boxing Day Test.

Pakistan-born Khawaja, now 38, has hinted that next summer’s Ashes series could be the end of his career. Both Constas and McSweeney are considered contenders to replace him.

McSweeney expressed his feelings

Speaking to Sydney Morning Herald, McSweeney said, “I would definitely like to return to the Test team again. There is no doubt about this. Ussi (Usman Khawaja) has been amazing, but whenever the opportunity arises, or if the opportunity comes, I will try my best to capitalize on it. To be honest, I didn’t have time to think much about it. Everything happened very quickly, and then I went back to playing T20 cricket (Big Bash League).”

Nathan expressed disappointment at being out of the fourth test. He said, “There will be talks on these issues. I have to talk to the selectors and understand what I have to do to get another chance. I am ready to bat at any position and look forward to playing whatever role I get.”
