Delhi: Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has made it clear that he is neither retiring nor giving up the captaincy. His decision not to participate in the Sydney Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia had created a stir in the cricket world. But, now he himself broke his silence on this and said that he is “stepping down” and not sitting out.

‘People can’t decide when we should play’

Speaking to Star Sports, Rohit said, “I took this decision myself. I would like to call it a ‘step down’. This is not a decision to retire or leave the game. I am just getting out of this Test because my bat is not doing that well at the moment. Things can change every moment in cricket. I believe in myself that the situation will change. But, I am also realistic.”

He further said, “Those who are sitting with microphone, laptop or pen cannot decide our lives. We have been playing cricket for so many years. These people cannot decide when we should play, when we should sit out or when we should captain. “I am a sensible man, a father of two children, and I have some sense about my life.”

The Indian captain further said, “It was very difficult. I have come all this way, just to come here and sit outside? I want to play and win matches for my team. Ever since I stepped into the dressing room in 2007, my aim has been this – to win for the team. But, sometimes you have to understand what the team needs. If you don’t give priority to the team, then all this is useless.”
