Delhi: Australia won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by defeating India 3-1 in the fifth Test on Sunday (January 5) and captured this prestigious trophy after almost a decade. Last time Australia won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2014-15. With this defeat, India’s dream of reaching the final of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) was shattered. Now the WTC final will be played between Australia and South Africa at Lord’s in June 2025.
In the 5th and final Test match of the series played at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), Australia achieved the target of 162 runs by losing 4 wickets on the third day.
By lunch on the third day, Australia had scored 71 runs after losing 3 wickets in 13 overs and needed 91 runs to win. Usman Khawaja (41), Sam Konstas (22), Marnus Labuschagne (6) and Steve Smith (4) were out cheaply. Prasidh Krishna bowled brilliantly and took 3 wickets for 27 runs in 6 overs, but Mohammad Siraj gave away 38 runs in 7 overs. Jasprit Bumrah not being fit proved to be a big blow for the Indian team. For Australia, Travis Head (34) and Beau Webster (39) played match-winning innings.
India had scored 185 runs in the first innings, while Australia’s team was limited to 181 runs in the first innings. In the second innings, the Indian team was all out after scoring only 157 runs in the first session on the third day. India took a total lead of 161 runs and gave Australia a target of 162 runs.
Rishabh Pant (61) scored the most runs in India’s second innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal (22), KL Rahul (13), Shubman Gill (13), Virat Kohli (6), and Nitish Kumar Reddy (4) failed to play big innings. Ravindra Jadeja (13), Washington Sundar (12), Mohammed Siraj (4) and Jasprit Bumrah (0) also could not do anything special. Prasidh Krishna remained unbeaten after scoring 1 run.
Scott Boland bowled lethally for Australia and took 6 wickets. Pat Cummins took 3 wickets and Beau Webster took 1 wicket.
