Delhi: After the Test match played in Sydney on Sunday, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar had to face an awkward situation when Cricket Australia ignored him in the presentation of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Australian legend Allan Border was seen handing over the trophy to winning captain Pat Cummins, while Gavaskar remained standing on the boundary line. After the anger of the fans over this incident, Cricket Australia admitted its mistake.
Australia Board’s decision
The Australian board had already decided that Allan Border would award the trophy if Australia won at the Sydney Cricket Ground, and Sunil Gavaskar would award the trophy to India’s stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah if India leveled the series 2-2. But, on Sunday, no need was felt to call Gavaskar on the stage, even though he was present there for commentary.
After the reaction of fans and Gavaskar, Cricket Australia admitted that this decision was not right. A spokesperson said, “It would have been better if both Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar were on the stage to present the trophy.”
What did Sunil Gavaskar say?
Sunil Gavaskar expressed his displeasure over the incident. Talking to Code Sports, he said, “I should have definitely got a chance to give the trophy. After all, this is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, representing both India and Australia. Australia played better cricket and won, there is no problem in that. But, just because I am Indian, I was ignored. I would have been very happy to present the trophy with Allan Border.”
However, Gavaskar admitted that he was already informed about this. He said, “I am not feeling sad, but it feels a little strange. This is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and it would have been right to have both of them on the stage.”
