Delhi: India’s World Test Championship (WTC) hopes are over after the defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Now the discussion is hot about the future of Test cricket, especially about the future of the two senior players of the team – Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
However, captain Rohit Sharma, while clarifying his decision in the Sydney Test, had said that he has no intention of retiring from Test cricket. But, his comment did not make much impact in the BCCI circle.
Discussion on Rohit’s performance
A special general meeting of BCCI is going to be held on Sunday, in which Devjit Saikia will take over the post of Secretary of the Board. Rohit Sharma’s Test career can also be discussed in the meeting. 37-year-old Rohit scored only 31 runs in 5 innings in the Australia tour. His average was 6.2, which is the worst performance of any Indian captain so far in Australia. In the 8 Test matches played since September, he has scored only 164 runs, which includes one half-century.
Controversy in Sydney Test
Rohit had taken himself out of the team before the decisive match of the Sydney Test. After this decision, speculations about his retirement from Test cricket had intensified. But, while talking to Star Sports, Rohit said, “I am not going anywhere.”
BCCI’s stance
According to a report in Hindustan Times, BCCI officials are not taking Rohit’s comment seriously. BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia will hold a meeting with the team management and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, in which the team’s performance will be reviewed.
A BCCI official said, “Rohit was looking for a chance for the WTC final. Now it is up to him whether he wants to fight for his place in the team or not. But, the final decision will be on Ajit Agarkar and his selection committee.”
