Delhi: After defeating India 3–1 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the Australian team is playing a series of two Test matches on a tour of Sri Lanka under the ICC World Test Championship (WTC). The first match of this series started today, i.e. from 29 January at Gaul International Stadium. In this, veteran batsman Steve Smith created a new history. He broke the big record of India’s great batsman Sachin Tendulkar as soon as he scored just 1 runs and overtook him in terms of completing the fastest 10,000 runs in Test cricket. Along with this, he also demolished the records of many other veterans.

In the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Steve Smith reached 9999 runs and missed this historic achievement in front of domestic audience in Sydney. However, in the Gaul Test against Sri Lanka, he achieved this position and became the world’s 15th and Australia’s fourth batsman to score 10,000 Test runs. Before him, Alan Border, Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting were able to achieve this feat for Australia.

Smith has equaled Sri Lankan veteran Kumar Sangakkara (115 matches), leaving behind Sachin Tendulkar (122 matches) in terms of completing the fastest 10,000 Test runs. Now he has jointly become the second fastest batsman in the world to achieve this achievement. Beyond him, only the great West Indies batsman Brian Lara (111 matches).
