Delhi: The removal of India’s all -rounder Hardik Pandya from the captaincy of the T20 team is considered to be quite unfortunate, as between 2022 and 2024 he took command of the team on several occasions. The BCCI selection committee had decided to make Suryakumar Yadav captain in place of Rohit Sharma, who retired after the T20 World Cup 2024. However, according to a report, Hardik may return as a captain due to Suryakumar’s poor performance.
Suryakumar Yadav had once finished the top position in the rankings of ICC T20 batsmen, but since he was handed over the captaincy of the Indian team, his form continued to fall. Ever since he took the captaincy before the tour of Sri Lanka last year, he has been able to score only 258 runs in 14 innings, in which his average has been only 18.42. In the recently ended domestic T20 series against England, he could score only 28 runs in 5 innings, in which he could not even open an account twice.
Given Suryakumar’s performance, the report claimed that some BCCI officials and new head coach Gautam Gambhir believes that he has been wrong with Hardik earlier and he can get captaincy again.
Why did Hardik not get T20 captaincy?
BCCI’s selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar had earlier told that Hardik was kept away from captaincy due to fitness reasons.
He had said, “Hardik is a very important player for the team, but his fitness has been a challenge. When a player is unavailable again and again, it becomes difficult for coaches and selectors to take a decision. So we chose Suryakumar as captain. We felt that in this way we could manage Hardik better. “
Now if Suryakumar’s poor form continues, then the BCCI can again consider making Hardik Pandya a T20 captain.
