Delhi: Before the introduction of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced several new rules. Now a new rule has also come out regarding the super over. If a match is tied, the super over is used to decide the winner. According to the new rule, the super over will continue until a team wins. BCCI hopes that the result of the match will come out within an hour of the super over starts.

Important rules related to super over:

  • Each team gets to play six balls in the super over. The team which will score more runs, will be the winner, no matter how many wickets they have lost.
  • The innings ends as two wickets fall in the super over.
  • If the super over is also tied, then new super overs will be played until the winner is found.
  • Keeping in mind the weather conditions, the super over, 10 minutes after the end of the match, will be played.
  • If there is any obstruction during the super over, it will be given extra time to complete it.
  • The super over will be played on the same pitch until the umpire and the Ground Authority take any other decision.
  • Only those players can play in the super over which were part of the main match.
  • Any penalty given in the main match will be applicable in the super over.
  • The umpire will remain the same who was present at the end of the match.
  • The team who was batting in the second innings will bat first in the super over.
  • Each team will be allowed to take a failed DRS in the super over.
  • The bowling team can select the ball of their choice from the additional balls provided by the umpires.
  • The fielding team will have to decide from which end it will bowl.
  • The same fielding rules will apply during the super over, which were in the last over of the match.
  • There will be a 5 -minute difference between two super overs.

If the super over is tied too?

  • If the super over is also a tie, then the second super over will be played and it will continue until a team wins.
  • Every super over, 5 minutes after the end of the last super over, will start.
  • The team, which batting later in the last super over, will bat first in the next super over.
  • The balls used in the first super over will also be used in the next super over.
  • The fielding team will bowl from the same end from where he did in the last super over.
  • The batsmen who have been dismissed in the last super over cannot bat in the next super over.
  • No bowler bowling in the last super over can bowl in the next super over.
  • All other rules will remain the same as applicable in the first super over.

If the super over is not complete?

  • If the super over or subsequent super over is not completed, then the match tie will be declared.
  • After this, both teams will get equal marks.
