Delhi: The Hambantota High Court has registered a case against former Sri Lankan off -spinner Sachitra Senanayake during the 2020 Lanka Premier League (LPL) for inciting a fellow player for match fixing.
According to the Attorney General Department of Sri Lanka, this is the first time under the recently implemented anti-corruption law of the country, when such a national level cricketer has been framed. Senanayake was arrested in this case in the year 2023, but was later released on bail.
The 40 -year -old general took 1 Test, 49 ODIs and 24 T20 international matches for Sri Lanka and took a total of 78 wickets. He was also part of the 2014 T20 World Cup winner Sri Lankan team.
According to local media reports, Senanayake contacted the national player Thrindu Ratnayake playing for Colombo Kings for match fixing.
According to the report of Sri Lankan newspaper ‘Daily Mirror’, “Commonke is also accused that he also contacted two other players participating in the first LPL tournament held in 2020 via Dubai and tried to celebrate them for fixing.”
This case is being considered an important step towards strict action against corruption in Sri Lankan cricket.
