Delhi: Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has expressed the need to implement special windows for international cricket. He believes that this can make the World Test Championship (WTC) a “more similar competition”. The ICC Cricket Committee is going to hold a meeting in Zimbabwe soon, in which the proposal to change the format of WTC will be discussed.

The schedule of matches is important

Williamson said in a conversation with ESPNcricinfo, “I like Test cricket and want it to remain. Along with this, it can be a way for young cricketers. If you can give priority of such window where teams play continuously and equally with each other, I think it can make a uniform and better competition.”

He further said, “The WTC program is not ideal for every team. When you can see it again after the two-year Test Championship window, it is okay to change it a little. This competition is still in its early stages, and these things will always be seen, but it is difficult because it is only 12 months in a year.”

WTC needs improvement

Williamson talked about the change in WTC rules and said that this will give more context to the competition. He said, “When there is a tournament in front of a team, they are very keen to win it. The context has been talking for some time, and it is good that efforts are being made to improve it.”

New Zealand’s WTC win

New Zealand’s experience of winning WTC’s first championship was very special. Williamson described it as one of the greatest moments in the history of New Zealand. He said, “Now the reference in Test cricket has increased, and every team now struggles completely for the result. For us, winning the first WTC final was really special and it was an important moment in our history.”
