Delhi: Former Sri Lankan captain and veteran all -rounder Angelo Mathews has announced his retirement from Test cricket. The 37 -year -old announced the announcement on Friday. He told that he will play his last Test match during the upcoming series against Bangladesh, which will start from 17 June. Its first Test match will be played at Gaul International Stadium.

Angelo Mathews shared the message on social media, writing, “My dear friends and family, the time has come for me to say goodbye to the most loved format Test cricket.” He further wrote, “Playing cricket for Sri Lanka for the last 17 years has been a matter of great honor and pride for me. Wearing a national jersey cannot be compared to anything else of the spirit of patriotism.”

He said, “I am saying goodbye to the Test format, but according to the discussion with the selectors, I will be available for white ball cricket (ODI and T20), whenever the country will need me.”

The Sri Lankan veteran said, “I thank God, my parents, my beautiful wife and children as well as my entire family and close friends who always believed in me, supported me and supported me. Also, I want to thank Sri Lanka cricket and all my coaches for their support.”

The Test career of Sri Lankan legendary cricketer Angelo Mathews has been an inspiration for cricket lovers. He started his Test career against Pakistan on the historic ground in Gaul in 2009. Just four years later, in 2013, he took the captaincy of Sri Lanka on a tour of England and achieved the distinction of becoming the youngest Test captain in the country.
