Delhi: Former veteran leg -spinner Anil Kumble said on Monday that the captaincy of the Indian cricket team is different from the captaincy of franchise cricket, but Shubman Gill is ‘capable of understanding’ it because, he is getting ready to command the Test team.

25 -year -old Shubman Gill will be the captain of the Test team, as India is going to play a five -match Test series against England after the retirement of veterans like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin.

Kumble while interacting with Steve Waugh, Matthew Hayden and Robin Uthappa during a program by ‘Australian Summer of Cricket 2025-26’ said, “They are all capable, you have seen what kind of cricket they play and which brand cricket.”

When Kumble was asked for any advice for the young Indian Test team, he said, “To captain India is slightly different from the franchise or state team captaincy. Special responsibilities and pressure are associated with it. But, I am confident that Shubman will understand it and he is capable of it.”

Kumble said that it would be difficult to reconcile Kohli, Rohit and Ashwin with the situation of not being in the team, but it will give Gill a chance to create his own legacy.

The former right -handed spinner said, “Change is bound to happen and when the three pillars of Indian cricket, which have been part of the team for a long time, will not be available now, it will also be a different experience for us, when the team will land in the first Test and these three names are not in the team sheet, then that scene will also be different.”

He further said, “But this is the beginning of a young team and this is the new cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC), which this team will try to win and then reach the final one day and one day the trophy will also be named. I am sure Shubman Gill will try to create that kind of legacy.”
