Delhi: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has been suspended for a week due to increasing tension between India and Pakistan. Former Indian wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta has said that the decision to start a possible re -start of the tournament will depend on the ‘atmosphere’ of the country.
In view of the current situation, many foreign players have left India, including 10 England players. Australian players are also preparing to leave, while West Indies players still remain in India. There are a total of 16 matches left in the tournament, which was to be completed by 25 May.
Talking to BBC Sport, Dasgupta said, “Cricket is very important for India, but some things are more important than that. The sentiments of the country are different at this time and the suspension of IPL is prudent in such an environment.”
Will the IPL start again?
Dasgupta said that the start of the tournament next week is ‘potential’, but “beyond reality” can also be. He said that if foreign players are not available, then the return of the tournament will be difficult.
Deep Dasgupta said that at the moment, talking about any match between India and Pakistan will be ‘very insensitive’. He said, “It is meaningless to talk on India-Pakistan cricket at this time. This is not a priority.”
Earlier, India refused to participate in the ICC Champions Trophy played in Pakistan, after which the ICC announced that the global tournaments between the two countries will now be at a neutral site. Pakistan has qualified for the Women’s World Cup to be held in October, but in the current situation, there is uncertainty about their matches.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced on Thursday that the remaining matches of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) will now be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The teams left from Pakistan on Friday.
