Delhi: Former Indian cricket team captain Mohammad Azharuddin has expressed grief by the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) on the orders of removing his name from the northern pavilion stand of Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Uppal, Hyderabad. The instructions have been issued by HCA’s moral officer and Lokpal Justice V Ishwariah, from which Azharuddin is unhappy and urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India to take action.

The dispute began when a local group named Lord’s Cricket Club filed a petition before the Hyderabad Cricket Association. He claimed that HCA President Azharuddin had wrongly named the North Pavilion Stand after his name. According to his argument, it was a conflict of interests, as Azharuddin took this decision without the approval of the HCA’s general assembly or the top council.

While agreeing with the claim, Justice Ishwariah said in his 25 -page judgment, “The fact that the decision has not been amended by the general assembly, strengthens the case against the defendant number 1 (Azharuddin), because the defendant number 1 has encroached his right to benefit themselves. As a result of my conclusions, the conclusions of the interests are a clear matter.

HCA has instructed to remove Azharuddin’s name from IPL 2025 season tickets, as five matches will be held in the stadium.

Azharuddin expressed his grief after the decision and said, “I feel very sad to say this, but sometimes I regret playing cricket. It is very sad to see that people who do not have very little or understanding about the game are now on the positions of teaching and leadership now. It is completely derogatory for the game.”

He further said, “Whatever is happening, it is beyond comprehension and it is hurting me on the personal level. I was not allowed to contest HCA elections only because I exposed corruption within the system. This is because of this truth I was targeted.”
