Delhi: A big news has come for the fans of the Indian Premier League (IPL). BCCI is seriously considering increasing the number of IPL matches to 94 from 2028. However, at the moment there is no intention of connecting a new team. Currently, a total of 74 matches are played in the tournament, including the finals. This number was fixed after the arrival of Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in 2022.
Plan to increase match
Earlier, the BCCI plan was to bring the number of matches to 84 by 2025, but the decision had to be postponed due to broadcasters’ concerns about international cricket programs and double header matches.
New format may be implemented from 2028
IPL chairman Arun Dhumal told ESPNCRICINFO that since 2028, the entire home and avay format with 94 matches can be started with new media rights. According to Dhumal, every team should get a chance to play both at home and outside against all other teams, and for this 94 matches are necessary. However, he also said that it is difficult to do so due to the busy schedule of international cricket. It will be decided on this when the right time comes.

IPL window is currently fixed
The IPL is currently held from mid -March to the end of May. In 2025 also the tournament will run for about 9 weeks and it will have 12 double headers. If the matches grow in future, then you will have to take extra time of about two weeks in the international calendar.
Viewer fatigue is also a big challenge
In the middle of the IPL season, there is a decline in TV and online viewership, which broadcasters consider the result of ‘viewer fatigue’. In such a situation, the BCCI will take a final decision only after discussion with broadcasters and other partners on this issue.
New teams are not considered at the moment
Arun Dhumal made it clear that at present, the format of 10 teams is correct and maintaining the quality of the tournament is his priority. New teams will be considered only when needed in future.
IPL of 2025 was extremely successful
Dhumal described the 2025 IPL season as very successful. He said that there was a tremendous match between the teams and many young Indian players performed brilliantly. He also said that if a new team wins the title this year, then it will be a better sign for the tournament.
