Delhi: Australia won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by defeating India by 184 runs in the fourth Test match played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). While talking to the media after the match, Team India captain Rohit Sharma spoke openly about Rishabh Pant’s style of playing.
Head made ‘obscene gesture’ as soon as Pant was out, know what it means?
‘Pant has to understand what the team wants from him’
Rohit told reporters after the fifth Test, “There has been no special discussion about today. We are all disappointed. Pant himself will have to understand what the team wants from him. It is more important that he understands it himself rather than others telling him.”
The Indian innings had a bad start and the team’s score was 33 for 3. After this, Rishabh Pant (30 runs, 104 balls) and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal added 88 runs for the fourth wicket. No wicket fell in the second session and it seemed that India could achieve a draw. But, Pant tried to play a big shot at long on off the ball of part-time spinner Travis Head and was caught out. At that time the team’s score was 4 for 121. As soon as Pant was out, Australia got a chance to take control of the match.
‘Difficult to talk as captain’
Rohit further said, “As a captain, it is difficult to talk because the things he does also bring him success. But it is a matter for them to understand what is the right way. It also depends on the situation. If the percentage of risk is higher in certain situations, do they want to take that risk? Would you like to give the opposition a chance to make a comeback? These are things they have to understand themselves.”
“I have known Rishabh for a long time and understand his game also. We have discussed this many times before. There is no doubt that I did not communicate with him or that he did not understand the expectations of the team. He understands. But, whatever things he does, he also gets good results. It’s a matter of the fine difference between forbidding them to do those things or allowing them to do them.”
The fifth and final Test of the series will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3.
