Delhi: Australia has suffered another major setback before the Champions Trophy 2025. Veteran fast bowler Mitchell Starc has withdrawn the name from the Champions Trophy 2025 due to personal reasons. Because of this, now Steve Smith will captain Australia in the tournament.
Being out of Stark has increased Australia’s concern as Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Marsh have already been ruled out of the team. Apart from this, Marcus Stoinis has retired. This means that Australia will play without the main fast bowling pair that won their World Cup.
Australia’s chief selector George Bailey honored Stark’s decision, saying, “Mitchell always prioritize playing for the country. He has performed brilliantly in spite of pain and difficulties many times. It is harmful for us to play, but it is an opportunity for other players to prove themselves. “
New players join the team
Steve Smith has been given the captaincy, who has already won Australia 2–0 in the Test series against Sri Lanka.
Australia has made many changes in its team. Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarashuis, Jake Fraser-Macgark, Spencer Johnson and Tanveer Sangha have been placed in the team, while Cooper Conauli has been included as a traveling reserve.
Left -arm fast bowler Spencer Johnson is considered to be an alternative to Stark, although he has not been able to take any wickets in 2 ODIs yet.
Australia’s Champions Trophy campaign
Australia will play two ODIs against Sri Lanka before the Champions Trophy, which will be in Colombo on 14 and 16 February.
Australia’s first match in the tournament will be with England on 22 February, followed by South Africa on February 25 and Afghanistan on February 28.
