Delhi: Shane Watson, a former Australian all -rounder and assistant coach of Delhi Capitals in the IPL, was surprised when he saw that Karun Nair landed to open with Karun Nair Faf du Plessis in the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Usually this change was made by keeping the young Abhishek Porel playing at this place, and Nair was out without opening the account on the first ball.
Watson’s sharp statement on Delhi’s strategy
Speaking to Star Sports, Shane Watson said, “It was completely wrong to change the opening combination without any concrete reason. When I saw Karun Nair going to opening, I was surprised. I was not sure that such a decision has been taken.”
Lack of clarity in roles
Watson further said, “Such changes show that the team management does not have clarity about the roles of the players. When you take such decisions, the players themselves get confused and it can affect their performance.”
Big fall in Delhi’s innings
The innings of Delhi Capitals was completely shattered after Karun Nair was dismissed. In the very next over, captain Faf du Plessis and then Abhishek Porel also returned to the pavilion. After this, Harshal Patel and Jaydev Unadkat also walked Akshar Patel and KL Rahul quickly. Delhi lost their five wickets in 7.1 overs for just 29 runs.
Stabs and Ashutosh handled the innings
After Delhi’s condition deteriorated, Triston Stabs and Impact Player Ashutosh Sharma took over the innings of Delhi. Stabs scored an unbeaten 41 in 36 balls while Ashutosh scored a fast innings of 41 runs in 26 balls. Thanks to these two, Delhi scored a respectable score of 133/7.
Rain stopped the match
The match was canceled at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad due to rain and both teams got one point each. After this result, the SRH was out of the playoff race, while Delhi has got 13 points in 11 matches and is in fifth place in the table.
Karun Nair performs in IPL 2025
After performing well in domestic cricket, Karun Nair returned to the IPL this season. He scored an innings of 89 runs against Mumbai Indians (Mi), however, after the defeat, his only memorable contribution was 31 runs against the Gujarat Titans (GT). This season Nair has scored 154 runs in 6 innings at an average of 25.67 so far.
