Delhi: The Impact Player Rules implemented in the Indian Premier League (IPL) have increased the number of high-scoring matches on the one hand, while on the other hand the demand to remove it is also intensifying. The biggest name among the critics of this rule is Chennai Super Kings (CSK) veteran wicketkeeper batsman and former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Dhoni has now openly told why he finds this rule unnecessary.

During a conversation with Jiohotstar, Dhoni said, “When this rule was implemented, I felt that it was not really needed. It could be helpful for me to some extent, but it does not bring any significant change in my game. I am a wicketkeeper, so I cannot become an impact player. I have to be a part of the match.”

Dhoni does not agree that due to the impact player rule, high-scoring matches are happening in the IPL. He said, “People say that more runs are being scored than this rule, but I believe it depends on the circumstances of the game and the mentality of the players. Not more runs are scored with additional batsmen, but now the teams are playing aggressive cricket with more confidence. It is part of the development of T20 cricket.”

Significantly, the Impact Player Rule in the IPL has completely changed the strategies of cricket. Some teams are taking full advantage of this, while many players and experts are questioning its impact. Now it will be interesting to see whether BCCI makes any change in this rule in the coming season.
