Delhi: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 victory was turned into a terrible accident for the fans of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). 11 people lost their lives and more than 50 people were injured in a stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The accident happened on June 5, when a large number of people gathered to celebrate the victory of the team.
Rahul Dravid expressed mourning
Rahul Dravid, a veteran of Indian cricket and a resident of Bengaluru, expressed deep grief over the incident. He said in a conversation with NDTV, “Yes, it is very disappointing and sad. My condolences are with all the victims.” He told that Bengaluru is a sports lover city and people here like not only cricket but also sports like football and kabaddi.
RCB’s historic victory and preparations
RCB won the IPL title by defeating Punjab Kings in the final played in Ahmedabad on June 3. This was the first trophy of the team, which ran a wave of happiness throughout Bengaluru. After this historic victory of the team, it was announced to celebrate a big celebration in the city on 5 June. A bus parade and fan meeting was decided from Vidhan Sauha to Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Parade despite not getting permission
The Bengaluru Traffic Police had already refused to allow such a big event, but despite this the event was organized. It is being told that about two lakh people reached there. The situation became so uncontrollable that it became difficult to handle the fans.
The cause of the accident and the negligence of the administration
According to the government report, the temporary slab placed above a drain near the stadium could not bear the burden of the crowd of people and broke. Due to this, people started running around in fear and stampede. There was not enough arrangement to control the crowd. It is being said that only the people nearby were to be given entry in the event, but thousands of people without passes also reached there.
Parade canceled, program stopped in between
After the accident, the bus parade was immediately canceled and the fan program going on at Chinnaswamy Stadium also had to be stopped in the middle. RCB, mourning this tragic incident, announced financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh to the family of the deceased.
Franchise officer arrested, question on KSCA
On June 6, RCB’s marketing head Nikhil Sosale was arrested in this case. At the same time, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) is also being criticized for poor arrangements for the event. Due to this, KSCA Secretary A Shankar and Treasurer ES Jairam resigned from their post taking moral responsibility.
