Delhi: India captain and veteran opener Rohit Sharma got emotional on Friday, when he remembered the beginning of his cricket journey. This was the time when Hitman stood outside the Wankhede Stadium and got a glimpse of the Ranji Trophy veterans and now a stand is going to be dedicated in his name in the same historical ground. He called this special moment as ‘unrealistic’.
Rohit Sharma said, “It is an incredible experience for me to have a stand in my name in Wankhede, when someone starts playing cricket, he never thinks that one day there will be a stand of his name.”
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) recently announced that some stands of the Wankhede Stadium would be dedicated in the name of the legendary cricketers of India. These include Rohit Sharma, former captain Ajit Wadekar and former BCCI President and ICC Chairman Sharad Pawar.
On this occasion, Rohit recalled the days of his struggle and said, “I still remember the day when I used to stand outside the Wankhede Stadium, just in the hope that I can go inside and see the players of the Mumbai Ranji team practicing. This is probably in 2003 or 2004.”
He said, “We used to cross the railway tracks and go to Wankhede by finishing the practice of under-14 and under-16 teams in Azad Maidan. Me and some of my friends used to stand there only to get a glimpse of Ranji cricketers.”
Rohit further said, “It was very difficult to go inside the Wankhede at that time. Even now no common person can go inside, but those days were something else. They are not forgotten.”
