Delhi: Today (20 June) a new chapter of Indian cricket is starting. The first match of the big series of five Test matches between England and India is being played at Leeds’ Handingley Cricket Stadium. This series is named ‘Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy’. The teams of both countries have descended on the ground today by tying a black bandage.
Why has the players tied the black band?
Actually, these black strips are worn to pay tribute to people who lost their lives in a plane accident in Ahmedabad. On June 12, Air India flight (AI 171), going from Ahmedabad to Gatvik Airport in London, fell victim to the accident only a few seconds after the takeoff.
In this accident, 241 out of 242 people were killed. The plane collided with the BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad, causing many people to die and injured there. In this plane, 159 passengers were from India, 53 from Britain, 7 from Portugal and one from Canada. The only survivor is a citizen of Britain.
The England Cricket Board said, “Both teams will wear black bandage today and pay tribute to all those who lost their lives in the Ahmedabad accident. Our condolences are with all those who have been influenced by this tragic incident.”
