Delhi: In February 2024, when the South African team lost 0-2 against New Zealand, no one expected that it would be able to reach the World Test Championship (WTC) final.
One step away from first ICC title
One year later, the story has completely changed. South African cricket is now moving towards greater heights. Temba Bavuma and his team have made the impossible possible. She has reached the WTC final and now only one step keeps her away from this big title of cricket. The final will be played against Australia at Lord’s from June 11, which can give South Africa its first ICC title.
South Africa has made it to the finals by winning 7 consecutive test matches. 34-year-old Bavuma is in great form and has scored more than 500 runs in his last four Test innings.
Talk on the format of WTC
Hindustan Times had a special conversation with Bavuma, in which he spoke openly about the format of WTC. Bavuma was asked, “How do you like the format of the World Test Championship? Do you think all teams should play at least three-match series?”
The South African captain said, “Absolutely! We want more cricket in South Africa. We want to test our ability and strength in a better way. I remember our home series against India which ended 1-1. It was a series of only two matches and its ending felt a bit incomplete. You always play to find out who is the best. But, it did not seem so there. So yes, I think there should be at least a three-match series. England played about 22 Tests last year, whereas we played only 12. This is a difference of almost 50%. It is hoped that such imbalance can be eliminated.”
