Delhi: Indian cricket team veteran opener and captain Rohit Sharma on Wednesday announced to retire from Test cricket with immediate effect. For a long time, the speculation about his future has now come to an end. After Rohit’s decision, now, Team India will have to look for a new Test captain before the Test series of five matches played against England from June 20.
Rohit Sharma, 38, has already said goodbye to T20 international cricket, and now he will only be seen representing India in the ODI format. Giving information about his decision on social media, he wrote, “Hello, I want to tell all of you that I am retiring from Test cricket. Playing in white clothes for India has been a matter of pride for me. I am grateful to all for the love and support for so many years.”
Rohit played 67 Test matches, in which he scored 4,301 runs. He has 12 centuries and 18 half -centuries. During this time his average has been 40.57.
Recently, in an interview to journalist Vimal Kumar, Rohit revealed that he sometimes felt that he might not get a chance to captain. The right-hand opener said, “Yes, I thought it was like this. Sometimes everyone wants a young captain who could captain 10-15 years. So I thought that maybe there is no chance now. But, I will always be grateful that I got a chance.”
He further said, “I also know that I cannot captain 10 years. But, whatever time I got, I have to make full use of it. No matter how I have to bring out my entire capacity.”
Now that Rohit has left the Test captaincy, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will have to be appointed as the new Test captain. In view of the current situation, Shubman Gill is being considered as a strong contender for this role.
