Delhi: In the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025), there is a lot of discussion about Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s batting order. This experienced player of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has batted in most of the matches at seventh or below and has come to the crease only in the last overs. However, he has shown that he still has the power to play innings that change the attitude of the match. Dhoni has scored 103 runs in five matches at a strike rate of 150, including 7 sixes, which is more than any CSK batsman in this season.
In the match against Punjab Kings (PBKS), Dhoni promoted himself to number five, when the team needed 68 runs in the last four overs. He scored 27 runs in 12 balls, but the team lost the match with 18 runs. In such a situation, former wicketkeeper batsman Robin Uthappa said that CSK is going through a transition phase and he would like Dhoni to bat a little above.
Uthappa said, “I don’t think there is a lack of intentions in MS Dhoni. He has entrusted the responsibility to others and has given a clear direction for the future, so that the team can once again win the title. This change continues and while we all want to play as Dhoni, keep playing, but the real problem is not the end.”
Why is CSK losing chasing the target?
He also spoke on CSK’s run chase and said that the team started well, but lost the rhythm in the middle overs. Uthappa said that after chasing the big target, large overs are needed after the powerplay, which has been a matter of concern for CSK.
The former CSK player further said, “The team started well, scored at a run rate of around 9.8 or 9.9, which is quite good at viewing their openers. But, match should not be allowed to get out of hand in the middle overs. The approach of 7 to 12 overs remains very calm. Large overs are necessary after the powerplay, so that the opposing team remains pressure.”
The former right-handed batsman further said, “It is a different thing to score more runs in the powerplay, but hold the match on the middle overs, and the same CSK could not do. The last two overs wanted 42 runs, which were much higher. If two overs were of 15 to 20 runs, then only 22-25 runs would have been needed.”
