Delhi: Former England cricket team captain Michael Vaughan has supported the two-tier system for Test cricket. He has given a statement on the current ICC World Test Championship (WTC) saying that it should be improved.

Talking to BBC Sport on the first day of the only Test match between England and Zimbabwe, Vaughan said, “If you see how many Tests South Africa have played and compare Australia, India or England, then it is very confused for the common cricket fan. It is difficult to understand which team is the best in the world and which two teams reach the finals how much is the final.”

He further said, “I think Test cricket needs a strong story. At the moment, it is very confused and it is difficult for the common people to understand it.”

According to The AGE report, the ICC is actively considering a two-division system, in which Test playing countries will be divided into two levels. The top level will include teams like India, England, Australia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa and New Zealand, while the second level will be of teams like West Indies, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Ireland and Zimbabwe.

This proposal can be implemented in 2027 after the current Future Tour Program (FTP) cycle. It is being told that ICC President Jai Shah has discussed this proposal with Cricket Australia and England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

Significantly, the final of the ICC World Test Championship 2025 will be played between South Africa and Australia at Lord’s ground from June 11.
