Delhi: Former England captain Michael Attarton believes that Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Test cricket was not surprising, as the form and captaincy of 38 -year -old Rohit was not effective in the end. Rohit announced his retirement from Test cricket just before selection for England tour.
Some reports said that BCCI was preparing to move beyond Rohit, and Atherat pointed to Sky Sports during the same. The former English captain said that this decision was eventually taken because Rohit’s form was falling and India was losing under his captaincy.
Etitarton said, “Was this retirement completely his own decision, or did he realize that the selectors were going to exclude him? Because the report came a day before Rohit’s announcement that the selectors have decided to move forward, so these are speculation, we do not know, but in the end this decision was not surprising, because it is not a bad combination for any captain, when you do not have a bad combination for any captain. Under Rohit’s captaincy, 5 out of the last 6 matches have been lost-three against New Zealand and some in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Attarton also said that the depth of talent in Indian cricket is so much that in view of Rohit’s age, his bad form could not be ignored for long.
He said, “He is 38 years old. There is deep talent in Indian cricket. In such a situation, patience is less when your performance or results are not in your favor, so in this sense I did not find this decision much shocking, but when someone’s Test career ends, it is always a little sad. He has played an important role in Test cricket. However, he does not keep them in Test cricket’s top players.”
‘Rohit’s test career has been strange’
Attarton believes that Rohit will be considered the greatest opener of ODI cricket, but his Test career was a bit strange. The former English captain said that Rohit had to wait a long time to join the team.
He further said, “I think people will remember him as a wonderful ODI cricketer. He will definitely be one of the greatest openers in ODI history. But, the Test career was a little strange. He had to wait for a long time to come to the team and then his test career was divided into two parts. He finally scored an average of more than 40 and scored a dozen centuries, it is not a successful career, but not very brilliant.”
Significantly, Rohit Sharma, the right Hatya opener Rohit Sharma, has scored 4301 runs in 67 Tests at an average of 40.57.
