Delhi: Former India cricketer Syed Abid Ali died on Wednesday at the age of 83 in America. He represented India in 34 Tests. Syed was born on 9 September 1941 in Hyderabad. He took 397 wickets in his first class career.
For Team India, Abid Ali made his debut in international cricket from the Adelaide Test in December 1967. In his first match, he performed brilliantly with 6 wickets, which was also the best performance of his career. He also played excellent innings of 78 and 81 runs in the Sydney Test. Ali played Test cricket till 1974, in which 47 wickets and 1018 runs were won.
In 1967-68, Syed took 6 wickets for 55 runs in the Brisbane Test against Australia. This Hyderabad cricketer used to call his fellow players ‘Chichha’ with love.
After retiring from cricket, he also gave coaching to the Andhra Pradesh Ranji team along with the national teams of Maldives and UAE. Syed Ali played only 5 ODIs, out of which 3 matches were held in the 1975 World Cup. He played a brilliant innings of 70 runs in 98 balls against New Zealand. In his first class career, he took 8732 runs and 397 wickets in 212 matches. His best score was 173* run.
