Delhi: Former fast bowler of the Indian cricket team and Joginder Sharma, who won the first T20 World Cup in 2007, believes that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should not have retired from Test cricket at the moment.
There was a big shock in Indian cricket when two most trusted and experienced batsmen said goodbye to Test cricket. First Rohit Sharma announced his retirement, and a few days later Virat Kohli also said goodbye to this format. But, Joginder Sharma believes that this decision was taken ahead of time and both players could still contribute to Test cricket.
Joginder Sharma said in a conversation with ANI, “Virat Kohli’s fitness and performance do not show that he should retire now. I think he and Rohit should have continued Test cricket. Every player has a bad phase in his career, but this does not mean that he should leave the game.”
He further said, “The bench strength of our country is very strong. If one great player retires, the other talented player can replace him. However, it is not necessary that he also becomes the same great, but the game needs continuity. Look at the Australia team itself, he is a strong team today even after the retiring of many veteran players.”
Rohit Sharma scored 4,301 runs in 67 matches in his Test career, including 12 centuries and 18 half -centuries. His average was 40.57. At the same time, Virat Kohli played 123 Test matches and scored 9230 runs at an average of 46.9. He has 31 centuries and 31 half -centuries.
