Delhi: 25 -year -old young batsman Shubman Gill has been appointed as the captain of the Indian Test team for the tour of England, which starts from June 20. Gill has become one of the youngest players to take over the captaincy in recent years. Although he does not have much experience of captaincy in the red-ball format, he led India in a five-match series against Zimbabwe in 2024. Gill is also the captain of the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Gill has also been the vice -captain of India in ODI and T20. He played a role as vice -captain in India’s winning team in the Champions Trophy played in UAE in February 2025. In Test cricket, Gill has played 32 matches so far and scored 1,893 runs, including five centuries.
Former Indian opener Akash Chopra has given a big statement on Shubman Gill being made a Test captain.
Chopra told ESPNcricinfo, “There are a lot of challenges in Test cricket. If it was a ODI format, there was no concern. He has already been revealed as a successor. He was made a vice -captain for a long time, so this decision was expected. But when it comes to Test cricket, you will say that he is still trying to make a place for himself. The average is 35 and it is about 25 on foreign soil, which is not correct as a batsman, leave the captain’s point. “
He further said, “So, I see it as a ‘investment in faith’. You have seen talent and possibility in them. You move forward with hope and confidence with that player that this decision will prove to be correct.”
