Delhi: Former Team India captain and former president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Sourav Ganguly believes that Shreyas Iyer, who is in excellent form, should have been included in the Indian team for the five -match Test series against England in Headingley from June 20.
Iyer played his last Test match in February 2024, but he has been in tremendous form in all three formats in recent times. In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, he captained the Punjab Kings (PBKS) to reach the final, where he suffered a defeat against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). This season, Iyer scored an average of 50.33 and 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07.
In addition, Shreyas played five matches for Mumbai in the 2024–25 Ranji Trophy, scoring 480 runs in 7 innings at an average of 68.57 and a strike rate of over 90. Despite this, Indian selectors ignored him for the series against England.
Ganguly said in a conversation with Revsportz, “He has been playing tremendously for the last one year and should have been in this team. The last one year has been spectacular for him. He is no longer a player who was excluded. Now he is scoring, taking responsibility, taking short balls well. Even though he gives a chance to do this series, but I give him a chance that he can do in this series.”
