Delhi: India lost 1-3 to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, after which veteran batsman Sunil Gavaskar has raised questions on Indian team head coach Gautam Gambhir and his support staff. Gambhir’s coaching career after replacing Rahul Dravid has not been good.

Questions raised on coaching staff

Gambhir has added Abhishek Nair and Ryan ten Doeschate as assistant coaches and Morne Morkel as bowling coach. But, now fans and cricket experts are raising questions on his strategies.

Under Gambhir’s leadership, India first lost the ODI series against Sri Lanka and now has lost two consecutive Test series against New Zealand and Australia. In November 2024, India suffered a crushing 0-3 defeat against New Zealand, which shocked everyone.

Gavaskar raised questions

Sunil Gavaskar said while talking to India Today, “The time has come to raise questions on the coaching staff and their role. Why is India facing defeat, defeat and only defeat in such circumstances? The batting was poor in New Zealand and the batting here too was disappointing.”

‘Why were the schemes not implemented?’

Gavaskar also raised questions on the role of Morne Morkel and said, “Our bowling could have been better. Only two bowlers were performing well. Everyone was saying that the short ball should be tried against Head and Cummins, but it did not happen. So the question arises, what was the bowling coach doing?

The former captain further said, “If the coach had told this to the bowlers, yet the bowlers did not adopt it, then the bowlers should be asked why short balls were not bowled? There are so many questions that need answers.”
