Delhi: Australian cricket team veteran wicketkeeper batsman Adam Gilchrist has expressed his opinion in the ongoing debate on the greatest all -rounder in cricket history. He has challenged Ricky Ponting’s claim in which Ponting described South Africa’s Jacques Kallis as the best cricketer ever.
Ponting recently referred to his 13289 Test runs, 45 centuries and 292 wickets as unmatched achievements, referring to Kallis’s brilliant batting and bowling. However, Gilchrist believes that greatness in cricket is not only determined by data. He called the late Shane Warne the greatest player in cricket history.
In an interview given to News.com.com Dot AU, Gilchrist said, “I think Ricky is pointing to – Kallis is incredible according to runs, wickets and catches. But, cricket is more than the figures. In my view, Shane Warne is the greatest player ever. “
He further said, “The manner in which Warne played cricket, the way his strategy and bowling influenced it was unique. He was also a great batsman, although he was run out several times. I don’t think he felt his batting talent. If you talk about pure cricket talent – batting, bowling, catching and strategic skills – then Warne Number 1 for me. “
